Personal Details

Nurses in prisons provide a primary health care service comparable to that found in the GP practice and community health centres. Health services are provided to all prisoners who consist of a diverse range of ages, cultures and both gender groups.

To be able to apply for the role of a Nurse in New Zealand, you will need:

  • New Zealand or Australian citizenship OR
  • Permanent New Zealand residency OR
  • A work permit or residency visa (Note that if you receive a provisional offer of appointment for this role it will be dependent on you obtaining a work permit that is valid for a minimum of two years) AND
  • A current full New Zealand or international driver licence (you must be able to drive a manual vehicle as a requirement for this position) AND
  • To have a current Annual Practising Certificate from the Nursing Council of New Zealand OR
  • To be registered as a Nurse or have a current annual practising certificate in your country of residence.

Criminal Convictions Details

Note: The positions of Corrections Officer or Probation Officer (and some related positions) are exempt from the provisions in the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004. Therefore, the Department of Corrections is entitled to ask you to disclose all convictions when applying for these roles. A full list of the exempt positions is available in the Criminal Conviction Information Sheet, which will help you determine how to answer this question. If you are unsure please seek advice.
 
Please note that you must also declare convictions for which you received name suppression. This applies to all applicants, including overseas applicants.
 
All applicants will also be asked to complete a criminal conviction check that will be processed by the Ministry of Justice as part of the recruitment process.

To be successfully appointed to the role of Nurse, you will need to obtain the following prior to your appointment being confirmed:
 
  • New Zealand or Australian citizenship OR
  • Permanent New Zealand residency OR
  • A work permit (valid for a minimum of two years at appointment) AND
  • A current full New Zealand or international driver licence (you must be able to drive a manual vehicle as a requirement for this position) AND
